Bill Gates shared his thoughts on Steve Jobs this morning at an interview with CNN. Gates praised Jobs’ sense of design and how he was able to save Apple from sinking. The two have shared a long history, with consistent competition between the two. In Gates’ latest interview, he shared insights on Steve Jobs’ conduct, saying he would be casting spells and mesmerizing people. Let’s dive in to see some more details on the interview.
Bill Gates Shares His Insights on Steve Jobs and How He was ‘Casting Spells’ and ‘Mesmerizing’ People
As we have mentioned earlier, Bill Gates praised Steve Jobs and his conduct at Apple on several levels. From the design sensibility to the ability to influence people and revitalizing Apple, picking it from the ground. Bill Gates called himself a ‘minor wizard’ which made him coin that Steve Jobs’ spells didn’t work on him.
“I was like a minor wizard because he would be casting spells, and I would see people mesmerized, but because I’m a minor wizard, the spells don’t work on me,” said Gates
Even when he failed, he succeeded, Gates said, citing the 1988 introduction of NeXT, the computer that “completely failed, it was such nonsense, and yet he mesmerized those people.”
Gates also said that he had yet to meet anyone like Apple’s late co-founder – Steve Jobs who was consistently picking talent and motivating it to derive the best possible results. Gates said:
“I have yet to meet any person who” could rival Jobs “in terms of picking talent, hyper-motivating that talent, and having a sense of design of, ‘Oh, this is good. This is not good,’ ”
Furthermore, the competition that both Gates and Steve Jobs shared was remarkable in its own right as a lot of good things came out of it.
Reflecting on the culture he created in the 1970s as Microsoft Corp. co-founder, Gates said the company in its early days had “a self-selected set of people who were mostly males, I’ll admit, and yes we were pretty tough on each other. And I think sometimes that went too far.”
The consistent race in computing and innovation not only lead to the fierce competition but shaped the industry that we see today. We’re lucky to have witnessed it all in action. There will be more to the story, so be sure to stay tuned in for more details on the subject.
